Vietnam offers some of Southeast Asia's best-value massage. 150,000–300,000 VND for a skilled hour-long session. The challenge is that most therapists speak Vietnamese, not English. Your Massage Pass closes that gap.
Massage culture
Vietnam has a strong traditional medicine culture that includes massage as a core therapeutic practice. Alongside imported Thai and Swedish styles, you'll find distinctly Vietnamese techniques including Tui Na (Chinese-influenced bodywork) and hot stone treatments. Ho Chi Minh City has a dense massage scene — from expat-facing luxury spas to neighbourhood shops where most clients are local Vietnamese. The best sessions are often at the latter, but they require communication in Vietnamese.
The language barrier
Vietnamese is a tonal language — six tones, each changing the meaning of a word — making it exceptionally difficult to communicate in, even with a phrase book. Therapists at local shops rarely have working English beyond 'strong or soft?'. For health conditions, specific focus areas, or anything beyond basic session choices, pre-translated communication is the only reliable option.
Tipping
20,000–50,000 VND per session is appreciated. At higher-end spas, 50,000–100,000 VND. Not mandatory but expected at expat-facing venues.
What you'll find — and what to communicate for each.
Vietnamese traditional massage
Combines Chinese Tui Na techniques with Vietnamese acupressure. Firm and targeted. Often includes cupping or coin-rubbing (Gua Sha) at traditional practitioners.
Hot stone massage
Very popular in Vietnam. Basalt stones are heated and used to warm muscles before and during the session. Excellent for chronic tension. Specify any heat sensitivity.
Swedish-influenced oil massage
Found at modern spas targeting tourists and expats. Softer, more flowing. Good choice for a first session or when you want pure relaxation.
Foot reflexology
A Vietnamese staple. Highly skilled practitioners available at very low price points in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
