Cambodian massage culture is closely linked to Khmer traditional medicine, with techniques passed down through generations. Most therapists speak Khmer. Your Massage Pass communicates your preferences before the session starts.
Massage culture
Massage in Cambodia carries real cultural weight — the Khmer healing tradition includes massage as a recognised medical practice, and many therapists are formally trained. In Siem Reap, the tourist hub, you'll find a wide range of options from hotel spas to affordable street shops. Phnom Penh has a growing expat and business traveller scene with increasingly sophisticated spa options. At both ends, quality is high — but communication remains the limiting factor for visitors.
The language barrier
Khmer script is one of the most complex writing systems in Southeast Asia. English is spoken at tourist-facing venues in Siem Reap, but less reliably in Phnom Penh's local massage scene. For any nuanced communication — health conditions, areas to avoid, pressure preferences beyond 'strong or light' — pre-translated Khmer is far more reliable than English.
Tipping
1–2 USD per session is standard. At higher-end spas, 2–5 USD. Cambodia is a predominantly cash economy — USD is widely accepted alongside Khmer riel.
What you'll find — and what to communicate for each.
Khmer traditional massage
Performed dry, similar in feel to Thai massage but with distinct acupressure points and less aggressive stretching. Firm pressure by default.
Oil massage
Common at tourist-facing spas. Uses local or imported oils. Softer and more relaxation-focused than traditional Khmer technique.
Foot reflexology
Very affordable and widely available in both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Quality varies — look for places with trained reflexologists rather than generalists.
Hot stone treatment
Available at mid-range and high-end spas. Particularly popular in Siem Reap's resort sector.
